RYA Competent Crew Practical Course

A Practical Course for beginners

How to be a useful crew member.

This is a Practical Course for beginners and those who would like to become crew members rather than just passengers.

At the end of the course you should be able to  helm the boat, manage the sails, tie a few knots, keep a helpful lookout and assist in all the day to day duties on board a sailing boat.

The syllabus includes…

  • Sail handling and rope work, including learning a few knots
  • Fire precautions and fire fighting, use of emergency equipment and of personal safety equipment
  • Understanding the procedure to recover a man overboard
  • Manners and customs, basic rules of the road
  • Meteorology – where to get a weather forecast from and what it means
  • Seasickness – the cause, effect and what to do about it
  • Helmsmanship and sailing – steer in a straight line under power and sail
  • General duties

There are no pre requisites or minimum age for this course, however in our experience children under the age of 12 tend to struggle with some parts of the syllabus.

For many of our courses, it is possible to join the boat the night before.

We operate a maximum of 4 students per course, often it is 3:1.
